Whilst team members were responding to callout #27, a call was received by our team leader from a contact at Pendle Hill, informing of a possible incident involving a paraglider crashing at the top of the steps. This was passed through to the leadership team dealing with the initial incident and as such organised an immediate deployment of team assets to this additional location.
With no further information available immediately, but the potential seriousness of this incident, additional team members made their way to Pendle from the Trawden show. The response vehicle from our team that was headed to callout #27 was also diverted as Bolton Mountain Rescue Team were likely to arrive at a similar time, if not slightly before, and along with our team members already on scene, would be able to deal with the incident there.
The North West Air Ambulance Charity was made aware and ready to assist if needed but initially waited on further information on the casualty details and location before deploying. Once team members arrived on the scene and began to make their way towards the casualty’s expected location. It soon transpired the paraglider had indeed crashed, but they had been able to make their way down the steps towards Pendle House Farm. However, on assessment by the ambulance crew along with our team doctor, due to the nature and potential seriousness of the injuries, the request was made for the air ambulance to assist also.
The casualty was treated and packaged on to a stretcher, before being carried to the land ambulance where they were assessed by the NWAS and NWAA crews. As ever we wish the casualty a speedy recovery.
A huge thanks once again to the locals and passers-by who assisted and a special shout out to Debbie from The Cauldron for providing the team members with cold drinks/refreshments once the incident had been dealt with.
