Yesterday evening (3/8/24) at around 18:00 we became aware of a situation on Pendle Hill, where we had been contacted via the team’s social media channels. As we were trying to make contact with the persons involved, we then received a callout from Lancashire Police for this incident.
Whilst team leaders tried to make contact with the informant and get an update on their location/situation, team members were mobilised to an RV point in Barley Village. Information was received that the walkers had begun to make their own way down and found a ‘useable’ route; so we were fortunate to get word they were back to a known point and able to continue down safely. One of our team members who was almost at their location, met with the party to ensure all was ok and the remainder of the team was stood down.
The walkers were very apologetic but these things happen we would rather have a call like this than one later when it is dark or an injury has occurred etc.
However, as you may guess from reading this, here are a couple of lessons to learn from this:
Firstly, please make sure you have the right knowledge skills and equipment for your planned route, please, before comment note they did have a map, but once off route became disorientated and unsure as to which way to go to get back down. #BeAdventureSmart www.adventuresmart.uk/
Secondly, in the event of needing assistance, please call 999 and ask for the police then request mountain rescue. They will always route this to the correct team for your location, and trigger a response from the team, whereas social media channels are not monitored by volunteers 24/7. #mountainrescue
