Over this past weekend, the team has been very actively involved in assisting Emily, who suffers from Motor Neurone Disease (MND), to achieve her challenge and goal to get to the top of Pendle Hill to raise money for the MND Association.
Before the diagnosis, Emily was an active person, often out walking and engaging in other outdoor activities, but in 2020 she was diagnosed with MND, and as such taking on this challenge has raised over £8000 for MNDA (Motor Neuron Disease Association).
In Emily’s own words, “The last big walk that Simon and I did together was to climb Pendle Hill in Lancashire. We are Quakers so this is a special place to us as it is the site where George Fox had a vision which inspired him to found the Quaker movement.” So it was an idyllic situation for the team to be able to assist in getting her to the summit and to be able to share this special moment with a group of family and friends together once more.
The team met at Pendle House Farm (thanks to them for access/parking and working alongside the team so much as always too) and used our ATVs along with other specialist equipment to assist Emily and some of her supporters in getting to the top in the most comfortable, practical and safe way as possible. Once at the top, the team set up a shelter to ensure they could spend some time here safely no matter the weather, but it was even better when the weather held off too. It was a touching and moving day to see so many people come together with Emily and support her in achieving this and the team were so glad to be able to be a part of making this happen.
But furthermore, Emily didn’t stop here, she also asked if possible that she could go for a wild swim somewhere on Sunday, so we met once more, this time with an array of our water rescue team and assisted once again in facilitating Emily’s wishes as she went for a swim in the River Ribble at Waddow Hall – Huge thanks to Waddow for allowing access and facilitating this – we are sure as a holder of the Queen's Guide Award, Emily appreciated this sentiment of this being done at a National Guiding centre too.
A huge well done to Emily, but equally to her close family and friends who have planned this over the last 6 months and liaised with the team and sorted out plans and logistics to ensure this was all possible for Emily.
