CALLOUT 73 – Call to assist with incident at Hurstwood Reservoir

CALLOUT 73

The second callout of the weekend came this morning (10/10/21) at around 11:15 when the team were contacted by North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) to assist with a gentleman who had broken their leg whilst out walking near Hurstwood Reservoir.

The team was mobilised, including 9 of our water team volunteers, who has only moments earlier had packed away kit from training in Ribchester to return to base to sort out!

The casualty had sustained a nasty lower leg break; they were initially treated by team members; provided with pain relief and the injury splinted before being placed into a cas bag (to stay warm) and onto the teams’ Mountain Rescue Bell stretcher.

Due to the nature of the injury Helimed (North West Air Ambulance Charity – NWAA) had also been requested and was deployed to the scene. The casualty was handed over and assessed by the Helimed paramedics, provided with further pain relief before being carried the short distance to the awaiting helicopter and ultimately flow onto Blackburn Royal for further treatment.

Thank you to the patience and understanding of members of the public who were out and about and gave room for the team and paramedics to work and allowed access for the air ambulance to arrive and depart safely.

Team members stood down from the incident and returned to our base, before cleaning equipment and sorting the water kit from this mornings training, finally returning home at about 14:30.
