CALLOUT 17 – Call to Assist Casualty on Pendle Hill

CALLOUT 18
Apologies for the slow posting, the recent weather and kit sorting on/off have delayed things.
On Friday 17th Jan, the team were called out to reports of a lady dog walker out on the moors walking her dog. The dog (a bouncy retriever) decided to get over giddy and pulled the lady over awkwardly on fairly steep but slippy, uneven ground, resulting in a rather painful knee injury.
After navigating the local farms for a suitable RV, members made their way to the casualty with the medical kit, entonox, splints and bell stretcher.
Once assessed by a couple of our Remote Rescue Medical Techs (RRMT’s), given some pain relief and splinted it was a short carry-off to Mob 2 and then along a rocky bridleway to the waiting land ambulance.
We wish the lady a speedy recovery and hope she’s out and about walking her dog again soon without too much of an issue.

At approximately 14:20 on Tuesday 21st Jan, we are activated to respond to another injured walker in the area of Holmes Chapel, near Cliviger. On the tops, a group of well-equipped and serious walkers from a local walking club had a fellow member slip and injure their ankle.
2 members hastily made contact first and as one was an RRMT, started assessing how bad the injury was. After pain relief and splinting we had 2 options to extricate – to the top of the hill a little higher up (approx 200m) or down a very slippy, steep hill we took the least risky for the casualty and the speediest to Mob 2 then to the road head where friends were happy to continue conveying the lady to hospital for further checks.
The team thanks the friends/walking group members who stayed by her side until we arrived. They were both prepared and calm (often a big blessing!).
Both events were separate, in totally different locations but with the conditions as wet and cold as they are after a big thaw too, please be careful out there. Ensure you have the right gear and take extra time on uneven, somewhat slippy ground.
With winds expected to hit 90mph this Friday/Saturday, it’s especially important not to take risks, not to go onto high ground if you must go out and avoid the dark too.

Keep safe all.
