Today, Sat 11th May, whilst covering first aid for an event – Pendle Cloughs Fell Race (English Championships), the team received a call from the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust to assist a runner suffering from heat related injuries.
A passer by had called through to the ambulance service to report a runner was suffering from the heat and also suffering with cramp on the hillside near to Ogden Clough.
By the time the call had been passed from NWAS and the team deployed, the team members at the event had already been made aware through a spectator who call the race HQ on the event and team members were already with, and checking up on the casualty. As such very shortly after, the remainder of the team was stood down in the knowledge that no further assistance would be required for this incident.
The runner was transported back the the race HQ, where met by family and advised they would take him on to get checked out at hospital.
Team members also wish to pass on their thanks to the spectator and other runners who gave up their race to assist this casualty. They were first aid trained and did exactly the right things in this situation, acting as a true image of the support we often see within the outdoor community.
Once again, as with the previous call out, we were thankful for the early call and ensured the casualty was able be treated, and should things have escalated at all, then any further resources that may of of been required were on their way.
